Taming the Stress You Can't Feel

Taming the Stress You Can't Feel

When you hear the word "stress", what comes to mind?

Many of us have come to associate the word "stress" with the physical, emotional, and mental reactions we experience when excessive demands are placed on us. That kind of psychological or emotional stress, is well-known in our fast-paced society.

A Breakthrough for Extending the Quality and Quantity of Life

A Breakthrough for Extending the Quality and Quantity of Life

Every now and then, science produces breakthroughs that change our understanding of what is possible.

Most of us alive now don't remember what it was like before antibiotics. Many of us might not remember what it was like before laparoscopic surgeries. (I can still remember when all gallbladder surgeries required large incisions!)

In addition to innovations that help us treat disease, science has been exploring how to extend the quality and quantity of life. Since 2004, the National Institute on Aging (NIA) has been running a series of studies known as the Interventions Testing Program.

Three Signs that it is Time to Get Support

Three Signs that it is Time to Get Support

We live in a culture of do-it-yourselfers (DIY).

It is not surprising, since many of us share a desire to be strong and self-sufficient. This desire is usually linked to some deeply held values that are rooted in our heritage. They are woven so tightly into our being that they shape our perceptions and assumptions about life, as well as the solutions that we might imagine for the challenges that we face.

How to Get Unstuck

How to Get Unstuck

Most of us feel "stuck" at one time or another — either individually or collectively. It can feel pretty frustrating.

Although being stuck is challenging, it also presents opportunties (don't most challenges?)

Six Keys to Making the Most of Change

Six Keys to Making the Most of Change

We've heard it said that the only constant is change, and that certainly seems to be true, especially this time of year. Now and then, though, life may present changes that are more significant than usual. Whether we are seeking those changes, or they happen unexpectedly, these experiences are disruptive. We may welcome that disruption, or we may dread it, but either way it offers us an opportunity.

Disruption creates a context of ambiguity and uncertainty, which is uncomfortable for most humans. For better or worse, however, these are optimal conditions for producing breakthroughs in our growth and understanding. If we are willing to mine these experiences for the gifts they offer, we are likely to find it worth the effort.

Thinking "Outside the Cube"

Thinking "Outside the Cube"

I have been working on a problem. I found a really cool resource for health-seekers that are changing their eating habits. AND...it's not perfect. So, I've found myself feeling a bit stuck about what to do.

The gist of it is that an enterprising company has created a selection of very healthy meals that are just what some folks are looking for. They are organic, without additives, or preservatives, free of GMOs, free of common allergens, rich in phytonutrients, and a number of other things that can be important if you're trying to create a healthy metabolism. They are also very convenient - ordered online, shipped to your home, and priced comparably to what folks might pay if they were eating out at a convenience restaurant. What's not to like? It's a great solution for busy people who are learning new ways of cooking and eating -- and who could use some convenient, healthy back-up meals on hand.

Transformation

Transformation

"We can't solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them." ~ Albert Einstein

Last week, I had the opportunity to accompany a friend to attend a preview of a new documentary, "Escape Fire". The film has already won a number of awards and is purported to be for the American Healthcare Crisis issue what "An Inconvenient Truth" was for Climate Change. Since healthcare transformation is a passion of mine, I was very eager to see it! The film was a provocative attempt at creating new thinking about a critical problem, and I recommend it for anyone interested in this topic.

The Power of a Mirror

The Power of a Mirror

I have always loved to dance, and over the years I've had my share of dance lessons. Most of them were ballet, and they occurred in locations that looked very similar. There was a large empty room with a wide expanse of floor, a barre attached to one wall, and a mirror on the other wall. The expansiveness of the room created a clear space where students could move freely. The barre was there to help us with balance. The mirror was there to reflect the way our bodies looked as they moved or stood still.

The mirror was an important tool as we developed deeper awareness of our bodies. When we could see what we were doing, we could decide if it matched the aesthetic we were trying to create and adjust our positions accordingly. Over time, we learned how it "felt" to be a dancer. After many rehearsals with the mirror, we could recreate that feeling on stage – confident that what we were now able to perform would faithfully represent the vision of the choreographer.
