Three Ways to Maintain Your Motivation

Three Ways to Maintain Your Motivation

It's the end of the January. The energy of the holidays are long over, and the heady optimism of a new year may be fading. So now is a great time to check in with yourself. Are you still on track?

Whatever dream you envisioned when the calendar page turned - yes, THAT one - does it still seem vivid and possible?

How to Get Unstuck

How to Get Unstuck

Most of us feel "stuck" at one time or another — either individually or collectively. It can feel pretty frustrating.

Although being stuck is challenging, it also presents opportunties (don't most challenges?)

Why Wait? Reasons for Delaying Your Best Life (Part 5)

Why Wait? Reasons for Delaying Your Best Life (Part 5)

There is a lot going on this time of year. As we complete another calendar year and gear up for a new one, we have opportunities to evaluate what we've accomplished and to dream about what is next.

Some of us will find that there are things on our dream list that didn't come to fruition. That seems to be pretty normal for most humans. But did you ever stop to wonder WHY some things get done and others don't?

Why Wait? Reasons for Delaying Your Best Life (Part 4)

Why Wait? Reasons for Delaying Your Best Life (Part 4)

This time of year many of us are doing holiday shopping. Or we may be delaying holiday shopping. There are always some of us who are out on Christmas Eve making final just-in-time purchases! Has that ever been you?

In this series of posts, I've been exploring reasons why people delay needed or wanted actions or decisions. I've shared about waiting for permission, waiting for perfection, and waiting for protection. This week is dedicated to those of us who are waiting for panic. We delay making decisions until a sense of urgency forces us into action!

Why Wait? Reasons for Delaying Your Best Life (Part 2)

Why Wait? Reasons for Delaying Your Best Life (Part 2)

Last week, I shared about a dilemma that many of us face. That is — in spite of knowing what we want, we delay the decisions or actions that will help move us toward our desired outcome. This post continues a series of reflections about reasons that we delay action, and how we can get "unstuck".

If you didn't see last week's post about waiting for permission, I invite you to check it out. This week I'm focusing on a reason that I personally know very well — waiting for perfection. This is going out especially to all the other recovering perfectionists out there. You know who you are!

The Myth of the Magic Bullet

The Myth of the Magic Bullet

If you've seen the TV series, ONCE, you'll remember the wily Rumpelstiltskin character. He often pops up in the stories, particularly when one of the other characters is facing some desperate situation and needs a solution that is beyond his or her power. As he strikes a deal with them, his signature line is "All magic comes with a price."

We are wired to look for easy answers (especially when we are desperate.) As a species, we are constantly seeking easier, more convenient ways to do things. When we are successful at saving time, effort, or money, we can redirect those resources to new areas. Some say that western civilization is built on this drive. It has certainly provided us with lots of innovative solutions.

What you KNOW -- can hurt you

What you KNOW -- can hurt you

My first car was a green 1968 Plymouth Fury. Her name was Priscilla.

Priscilla had a lot of personality because she belonged to my grandmother before she died, and had already been on plenty of adventures (some of which I had also enjoyed) before I bought her from my grandmother's estate during my sophomore year of college.

Eight Ways to Find Your Focus (Part 2)

Eight Ways to Find Your Focus (Part 2)

"I don't know where to start."

Of all the phrases that I hear from health-seekers, this is one of the most common. I find that when someone expresses this sense of overwhelm, it can come from several places. Sometimes they yearn for more clarity about what they want for their life and their health. Sometimes they need information, encouragement, strategies or a process that will help them move in the direction they desire. Sometimes they just need to manage the obstacles and distractions (internal and external) that pull them off track. In all of these cases, strategies for finding and maintaining focus can help them take the next step.

Eight Ways to Find Your Focus (Part 1)

Eight Ways to Find Your Focus (Part 1)

"Squirrel!"

Around our house, this exclamation has become the signal that someone has wandered off topic. If you've ever seen the movie "Up", you'll remember "Dug" - the dog with attention issues. The truth is, most of our days are filled with "squirrel" moments. Our external environments provide endless opportunities for information-overload and distraction. Our internal environments, left unmanaged, are at the mercy of our "monkey-minds", wilding swinging from thought to thought and often prompting us to behave reactively.

Seven Steps to Sustainable Change

Seven Steps to Sustainable Change

It's the first week of January and all over our country people are making hopeful resolutions about the new year. Business is booming at health clubs, no doubt. Sales of fitness gear, weight loss products, and self-help books should be doing well. The start of a new year is a prime opportunity for many of us to start in a new, healthier direction.

What do you DO?

What do you DO?

I was in a meeting the other day with a group of other women business owners when one of them admitted to me: "Julie, I STILL don't know what it is that you DO!"

After ten months of meeting together, perhaps I should have felt embarrassed... Instead, I appreciated her honesty, and felt grateful for the opportunity to provide clarity. It left me thinking, though -- Perhaps you wonder the same thing! What is coaching anyway? More importantly, why would anyone want to be coached?
