Every now and then, science produces breakthroughs that change our understanding of what is possible.

Most of us alive now don't remember what it was like before antibiotics.Many of us might not remember what it was like before laparoscopic surgeries. (I can still remember when all gallbladder surgeries required large incisions!)

In addition to innovations that help us treat disease, science has been exploring how to extend the quality and quantity of life. Since 2004, the National Institute on Aging (NIA) has been running a series of studies known as the Interventions Testing Program.

One of the books that I've been reading this summer is called The Upward Spiral by neuroscientist Alex Korb. Although the book is often rather technical, it is a fascinating explanation of how our brains are wired, and how we can stimulate various neural circuits to improve our happiness. One of Dr. Korb's first recommendations for creating "an upward spiral" is exercise.
