We live in an impatient culture, known for promoting ease and nearly instant access to what we want - whether that be food, information, transportation or hot water. Even though many of us might say that patience is a virtue, we may roll our eyes (at least internally) at the prospect of having to wait in line for anything.

Right now, those of us that celebrate Christmas are in the midst of a countdown of days until that holiday arrives. Many of us are also waiting for the dawn of a new year and all the possibilities that will bring.

How to Boost Your Body's Healing Power

Until recently, many people thought that their risk for chronic disease was mostly determined by the genes that they inherited. Recent scientific discoveries have revealed, though, that we have a lot more control over our health status than we thought. It turns out that what is in our DNA is only part of the story. The study of "epigenetics" is teaching us about some of the factors that determine how our DNA expresses itself - and whether certain genes get turned on or off.

Our bodies have any amazing ability to heal themselves, and the lifestyle choices that we make each day can boost or diminish this power. One of the ways these choices affect our health is through a pathway called Nrf2 Activation. In a nutshell, when this pathway is activated by our lifestyle choices, it affects over 500 "survival genes" which stimulate processes that decrease oxidative stress and inflammation, produce more mitochondria (the energy-generating components of our cells) and increase cellular detoxification.

There are several four-letter words considered off-limits in polite company. Using them in the wrong setting might negatively impact your relationships. So, avoiding those is wise and even admirable.

How to Get What You Need

As I sit to write this, I can hear that old Rolling Stones song going through my head — "You can't always get what you want...But if you try sometimes, you just might find — you get what you need."

This week's message was inspired by several friends who, after hearing the story about my ER visit (now eight weeks ago) asked me to share more information about how I was able to advocate for myself in that situation. It's a great question.
