Overview: As Americans are living longer, nurse practitioners (NPs) are increasingly engaged in helping patients prevent and manage chronic disease. With at least 50% of chronic disease being linked to lifestyle choices, a critical focus for NPs is helping to facilitate sustainable behavior changes among their patients. This presentation explores health coaching as one tool with demonstrated effectiveness in supporting change, and identifies strategies that nurse practitioners can use to access this tool. Participants will gain an understanding of the coaching process, distinguish key differences between the coach and clinician role, identify coaching skills and concepts that can enhance clinical work, and explore considerations when building referral relationships with health coaches.
